Centre for Intellectual Development and Learning
Encouraging thinking for long term flourishing.
Higher Education is often focused on helping students acquire knowledge, but William Perry argued that their holistic development can be XX
Employers, society, and students themselves need the ability to weigh evidence contextually, tolerate uncertainty, make principled judgements, and keep thinking when there are no easy answers. To do this, they must intellectually and ethically develop in a holistic way which reframes how they think about learning and life.
Our five themes
The TEACHER Framework
Original frameworks for dialogic learning in higher education, grounded in evidence and designed for practice. TEACHER describes what the educator designs and structures.
Active Self-Feedback
Moving students from passive recipients of feedback to active generators of their own insight. Research-informed methodology with practical tools you can use now.
Playfulness in Learning
Games, simulations, and playful approaches that develop deeper thinking and genuine engagement.
Employability Focus
The need for intellectual development in supporting flourishing careers for lifelong learners.
AI in Higher Education
A considered, research-informed perspective on how AI can support intellectual development and inner feedback, and what educators and students need to think carefully about.
What is CIDHE?
The Centre for Intellectual Development in Higher Education (CIDHE) is an independent hub for research, practice, and resources focused on how students grow as thinkers, and how educators can actively create the conditions for that growth.
Our work is rooted in a dialogic tradition, inspired by Freire's vision of education as a shared, generative encounter between facilitators and learners. We do not believe knowledge flows in one direction. The best learning environments are ones where curiosity is mutual, challenge is welcomed, and both students and educators are genuinely changed by the encounter.
Whether you are an educator looking for practical tools, a researcher exploring the field, a leader thinking about curriculum and assessment design, or a student looking to develop intellectually you will find ideas and resources here that you can use.
